the mission

The Purpose:
To assist our members with problems related to life at Gateway Plaza, and
To protect and, when possible, improve the Quality of Life at Gateway Plaza and its environs

We are a not-for-profit, community service corporation. We are staffed entirely by volunteers.  We provide this Web site as a courtesy to our members to share information, and to further explore community issues, problems and possible solutions.

The History:

The Gateway Plaza Tenants' Association was founded in 1982 in order to address common problems among the tenancy. Since Gateway was the only residential development in the neighborhood for many years, and since the complex is so large, our role expanded and evolved to one more likened to that of a neighborhood or block association. We have always prevailed in legal challenges. Among the results of them, we secured a private agreement that mirrors rent stabilization with respect to allowable increases on lease renewals. Gateway tenants also have a mandatory right to renew, with the tenant option of a one, two, or three year lease. Chapter 253 laws are inapplicable to Gateway residents.

We have had, and continue to have, a tremendous role in the shaping and management of our neighborhood. Our experience and reputation affords us a great deal of credibility in community affairs.

membership

  • Residential lease-holders at Gateway Plaza are eligible for membership and invited to join
  • Membership rates are $30 per household, and are good for one year from the date of payment
  • Of course, the real reason a household should join is to become another link in the most effective tenants' organization in Lower Manhattan, if not all of New York. Our track record is outstanding! But in addition,
  • Members are mailed a copy of the GPTA Newsletter
  • Members are invited, but not required to attend our General Members' Meetings.
  • In accordance with our ByLaws, Members' names and addresses are never disclosed to anyone under any circumstances without prior express permission from the Member.
